A lot of things about Bodhi's life had not gone to plan. In honestly, he can say very little had ever gone for him, the way he thought they'd turn out. Usually far from simple and painless as possible. In another life Bodhi Rook had worked for the Empire to pave a way for himself before seeing a way out and a chance at redemption. Taking it had nearly cost his sanity, but had eventually claimed his life as well as the lives of so many others.
And yet somehow... he was given another one. He, most of the original crew that had set from Jedha that day. It had not always been the peace he'd wanted for him and his friends, there were times when he cursed the porter for so much as pulling them there when they could have been free of the struggles presented with being rebels, and having people from the Empire, much at large and the other challenges thrown their way over the years.
But more so, he was glad of it. A chance, not a permanent one -- probably not, but it was something. A life to do the things he'd never been able to before.
If you'd asked Bodhi - both before and in the months after, if marriage or love had ever really been a thing he'd given serious thought to, he would have shrugged, shook his head and put it out of his mind. Now he's getting married. To a woman he'd met months before.
A woman he loves. He owes it to Poe, for introducing the both of them, going through the effort of setting things up to be perfect. The man had been such an invaluable aspect of his life since arriving here and Bodhi wasn't sure he could ever do a thing to make it up to him.
But... there was an odd feeling. An odd sense of fear, worry. A sort of hollow feeling as he thought about it, what could have been. Sometimes, even today it's on Bodhi's mind. He knows that Poe doesn't feel that for him -- he'd since realized that a long time ago. Poe is in love with the stars, and freedom -- not with any one person. He loved Bodhi, sure, but Poe loved all his friends.
And he loves Josephine -- that much he knows. That he can be happy with her.
For however long he's here.
If that hollowed feeling would ever fade, he doesn't know but since Bodhi has learned to live with it.
The reception is ... everything and nothing like he thought it could be. Jyn, Cassian and Kay are all there, as is Poe -- standing at his side, just as they've always been. Bodhi kisses her, and it's official. He's married. They're married.
It's a bizarre feeling. Maybe he just needs time to process it all, and the reception will likely be it (though he confesses to Jo the idea of skipping the reception all togehter and leaving straight away for their getaway, and she's almost tempted but reminds him of the money their friends put down for the affair).
Arriving, he stops to talk to someone on his way inside the venue, waving his wife ahead as she finds her own friends to talk to. Bodhi is mid conversation when Poe arrives. "Poe, hey. Thank you. Can you believe it? I know I never thought-- anyways, thank you."
It is almost impossible to keep smiling, with the way his stomach twists itself into knots upon seeing Bodhi.
He was such an idiot.
His hand reached out automatically to take Bodhi's, shaking it firmly, his other hand lightly resting on the man's elbow as he did so. His grip was a little too tight, his smile too forced, unable to keep that very real thread of sorrow from wetting the edge of his eyes. Calm the fuck down, Dameron.
"You deserve it, buddy." His voice was softer than he'd meant it to be. He held on a little too long before remembering where he was. He let go, then immediately didn't know what to do with his hands. So he shoved them into his pokckets. "I'd do more if I could."
Something felt a bit off, with the way he was looking at him. Bodhi could be imagining it, but --
"You've already done so much for me... I don't think I could repay you, if I tried." Not only for this, his friendship has meant so much to him over time and he hopes Poe knows that. He clasps the other man's shoulder briefly. Keeping his hand there, he tries to meet the other man's eyes.
Around them, people are filing in and out of the venue - occasionally someone would look behind at the scene presented but he didn't pay them any mind. Plenty of time to greet and thank everyone once he was inside, right now he just wanted to talk to his friend.
There's a visible hesitation, the briefest moment where Poe Dameron, a man infinitely more capable of action than he was of words, almost gave up everything by just leaning in and kissing Bodhi right there - right then - in front of everyone. The temptation didn't last long but it was there - a heartbeat before he pushed a tight smile to his lips and tried to pretend he was fine.
"Yeah. Yeah, of course I'm fine. Don't you worry about me, alright? Look, I'll catch you inside. No point keeping you from all your guests."
Bodhi smiled, but there was still a hint of concern there in his eyes, and in a smile that didn't one hundred percent look real. Perhaps he just got emotional at weddings. Jyn had cried, during the ceremony. "Okay." He gave Poe's shoulder a solid squeeze and turned to walk inside. "Ready to get this started? I think Kay has been planning to give a speech tonight, which - I'm not sure if I should be worried about that."
"Hey, if he does, maybe I don't have to give mine," He joked, but it came out weak, and it felt as if the speech itself was burning a hole in his breast pocket.
He took a step back, a little abruptly, and ran a hand through his hair. "Anyway. Yeah. I'll uh - see you later." And before Bodhi could actually say anything else, he disappeared inside.
Once in the party it was easy to go a little invisible. Usually Poe loved being the centre of a good time, would have been right in the thick of it and making people laugh and dancing. But it was a good enough time that other than Kaytoo giving him a Look, no one else much seemed to notice that he kept to himself on the sidelines. But the closer it got to speeches, the worse it was getting.
He knew, now, he could not speak the words he'd written.
He'd never been good at lying, and that's all they were: a litany of lies to himself, to Bodhi, to Bodhi's wife. Fuck, but Josephine didn't deserve him fucking this up. Neither did Bodhi. All he had to do was get through one damn night, then the two of them would be off on their honeymoon and Poe could throw himself into his work and just not look up for a while.
At some point he escaped to the washroom - thankful to find it (apparently) empty, and leaned over the counter just to breathe.
"You're a fucking idiot, Dameron," He muttered to his reflection. "Maybe you should actually think ahead for once in your life..."
He watches Poe go inside of the venue with an odd look, but follows him in and is immediately swept up in cheering and congratulations from friends and acquaintances, hugs and handshakes. The kind of attention Bodhi soon wonders if he and Josephine doing something more private would have been a better idea. It's a little overwhelming to him, to be so much at the center of attention but is a slight distraction from the earlier, almost hollowly happy feeling from before, for a time.
Because he's happy, but... well, he knows Josephine is too, from the beaming smiles that keep crossing her face as she talks to her Maid of Honor. And if that's what makes her happy, then it was worth it.
One thing he does notice, after a good half an hour of speaking with the guests, and the serving of the food - he realizes that he hasn't seen Poe in a while. Considering how hard he'd worked to help plan this whole event, it's a surprise to Bodhi.
And when the feeling settles back in his chest, it's out of concern, that's what he tells himself. Not out of any errant thoughts of what could have been. They'll pass in time.
Clasping his wife's shoulder briefly, he finds himself asking Kay and then Cassian - neither of which had seen him, either but believe that they had seen him disappear in the direction of the restroom a few minutes ago.
He's on his way back when one of the waiters trips and ... spills a glass of wine over him. With things in full swing, most people haven't seen it (and he doesn't see Veronica smile behind her hand as the waiter apologetically hands him a napkin).
Bodhi sighs, knocking on the door to the restroom. He hears Poe's voice and opens the door to see him leaning over the sink. Not for the second time tonight, concern edges at him as he approaches, he lays a hand on Poe's shoulder in a familiar gesture. "Hi. I was, uh... wondering where you were." He had been. And also, he gestures vaguely towards the red on the white shirt. "Minor accident out there."
Poe nearly jumped out of his skin, his self pity having completely consumed him to the point where he hadn't even heard Bodhi come in. He turned around incredibly quickly, then tried to let his heart calm down as he swallowed.
"Hey, bud. Yeah, sorry. Just needed a minute, I guess."
He was happy for the subject change, eyes falling to Bodhi's shirt. Good. Right. A problem he could focus on, that he could solve, that wouldn't have him blurt out something stupid and reckless.
"Ah, damn. Wine is a bitch to get out. Here, uh- why don't you take my shirt? We can switch. Don't want you looking less than your best for the photos, right?"
"I didn't startle you, did I?" Bodhi asks, smiling a little and fidgeting with the cuffs of his shirt. Looking at it in the mirror, all the spots of red that stand out on the white and sighs.
His eyes light up at Poe's suggestion. "That'd be great!" and then he frowns a little, hands frozen on the top button. "Though - you'd have a stained up shirt for the rest of the reception. I don't want to put you out."
"This is your night, Bodhi," he replied, and there was a wistful sadness to his voice that he couldn't quite hide. "Not mine."
Regardless, he'd already shed his jacket, folding it up and leaving it on the counter, before undoing his cuff links and then the first few buttons of his shirt.
The tone of his voice confuses him for reasons he can't understand, but he's not sure how or if he should bring it up - when Poe had already insisted that he was fine. For his own benefit, likely, he wanted Bodhi to have this night without worrying. After the reception, after they've all had their drinks and the edge of celebration would have worn off... he'd have a word with Kay, or Cassian - see if either could offer him an answer and have a word with him about it.
(If he had to guess, though, he'd say it was likely due to Finn's absence, he's not sure if his friend had ever completely gotten past that - isn't that the reason that Bodhi had never expected anything more between them? He shoves the thought away, quickly).
Bodhi smiles then, hand going to Poe's shoulder. "Thank you." And he starts on his own buttons (having left the jacket back on his chair back in the hall).
Poe offered a smile - mostly genuine, only a little pained - and finished with his own buttons. But the quiet intimacy of the moment pulled his rational thoughts away, and before he could stop himself he was brushing Bodhi's hands away and carefully undoing the man's buttons, his own shirt hanging loose and open.
"Anything for you, bud," he whispered, far too honestly.
It was such a simple thing, Poe helping him with his shirt. Raising a brow, Bodhi let his hands fall and allowed him to continue to work on the buttons.
And yet it felt so oddly intimate.
Now that he had gone off and gotten himself married, he would remain close to Poe as always. He'd been a staple part of his life over the last few years. But the closeness they'd shared: sleeping together on the same sofa because Bodhi was too comfortable to get up and go to his bedroom, things like that which had come from sharing the same space for so long.
Small, but perhaps the moments that he treasured the most, those would likely be the things to change. Bodhi was already well into packed to move out, and into a house with Josephine. He swallows thickly, the words sticking in his throat.
"I never thought I'd see this day." A pause. "You know you're stuck with me still, right? Just because I'm all married now doesn't change that you're still my best friend. I wouldn't even be here if not for you." Maybe he'd have met someone on his own. Or maybe not.
His fingers didn't tremble - didn't betray him at all as they slowly and methodically worked through Bodhi's buttons. He couldn't meet his gaze, though, so he was glad for something to focus on, swallowing around the lump that had lodged in his throat.
"Gonna have to change a little, bud," he murmured, the fourth button opening. His hands slipped lower. "I'm not going anywhere--" He needed to clarify, first. Fifth button. "But you've got different priorities now."
The 'I wouldn't even be here if not for you' stung, like his past self had unwittingly sabotaged his own happiness, and Poe couldn't help but look miserable. Sixth button.
"I want you to be happy, Bodhi." Seventh button. "That's all I've ever wanted, for you."
It was hard not to notice the look on Poe's face, or the way he'd been acting all night. There is almost nobody that Bodhi is closer to, in this universe - or even back home.
Not to mention, he's never been subtle when it came to emotions. He lapses into a brief silence as Poe continues to work his buttons.
"Hey." He says, softly. "You're still my best friend, yeah? That's -- that's not negotiable, not gonna change. Yes, I'm married now but it doesn't change that" He swallows. "I know... I know it's been hard for you since Finn left. But I am still here for you."
"This isn't about Finn." The reply is automatic - almost too quick - and then he sighs as he finally unclasps the last button.
"Sorry. Just ignore me, alright? I just - you know when you figure something out but it's completely useless to you? Like, great, if I'd figured this out earlier, I might have actually had a chance to --" he cut himself off, almost wincing. Fucking idiot.
He slid his hands up to push the fabric from Bodhi's shoulders.
Okay. That was oddly cryptic. Bodhi's brow furrowed as he looked at Poe, in obvious concern. Confusion. There was something that wasn't computing right, here. Something he didn't understand - or he'd missed. His hands go to Poe's - on his shoulders. Bowing his head slightly to meet his eyes.
Now, he was worried.
"I don't follow. Poe, hey. Whatever it is, you can talk to me."
The touch on his hands might be light, but it feels like he may as well be anchored, unable to move his hands or step back. His heart thumps painfully hard in his chest as a sudden impulse drives into his mind and his spine with relentless force.
Don't you fucking do it, Poe Dameron, he hears himself hiss in his head. Don't you fucking do this to him, not now, not today of all days.
He resisted for a second, maybe two, letting out a shakey breath as he tried to form a reply. But the impulse tore at him from inside, irresistible, and before he could stop himself he was taking that last step closer, warm hands on Bodhi's shoulders as he leaned in and pressed a warm kiss to his lips.
Bodhi watched the flicker of emotions play across Poe's face before he was moving closer to him, the briefest of moments - barely a breath had passed as Poe kissed him.
Shock kept him rooted to the spot, barely able to move or think beyond the cloud that had formed in his brain as Poe kissed him.
Poe kissed him on his wedding day and it made sense. His behavior, over this day. His brain caught up to his body, and he leaned into Poe a little bit before catching himself. But he'd been the one who'd set him up with Josephine, urged him into dating and getting to know her better. Hell, he'd even been the one to plant the idea of a proposal to Bodhi when they'd been together for almost a year.
For the briefest of seconds, Bodhi leaned closer, and Poe almost melted with how right it felt. How much he I wanted this - needed it--
And the Bodhi was pulling away again and the guilt hit him like a punch to the gut, forcing him backwards a step, the colour draining from his face, hands pulling away from Bodhi's shoulders.
"I'm sorry--" He started, miserably, raising his hands like he was being arrested. "I'm a fucking idiot, Bodhi, I'm sorry, I should not have done that--"
"Poe--" Bodhi swallowed, words sticking at the back of his throat. The devastation playing across his friend's face wrapping a fist around his heart and constricting it. Fuck.
"I thought you didn't -- I mean you set me up with someone else. I'd always thought... you didn't feel the same or were hung up on Finn."
He loves Josephine, yes. She's a great woman, kind and compassionate. Fun and funny. But he'd had those same feelings for Poe as long as he could remember. He couldn't even remember when they started.
And now no matter what -- now that it was out in the open, someone's heart gets broken.
"I didn't figure it out until I was standing there in that suit, and I realised that I'd-- I've been such an idiot this whole time, and I was taking you for gra--" but he stopped dead as Bodhi's words slowly filtered through, including their meaning.
Maybe he should've kept his mouth shut. But the truth was out, there was no going back now. He swallows, glances away and catches Poe's confused and stricken face reflected in the glass, his own shirt half done.
He's not sure what to do, now and that's the hard part. The words are out, though, in rushed and hurried tones - before he can stop them.
"I - thought it was obvious. Or I did. But then you set me up with Josie, and I love her, I do - but I still feel this for you and now..." he trails off, briefly. No matter what he does, now. "I don't want to hurt either of you, but it looks like it's a little late for that."
His heart was hammering way too fast, thudding against his ribs like a maddened, trapped bird.
"It's not your fault." The words don't even filter through his brain - they are just pure, solid, truth. "You've done nothing wrong. I'm the one-- I'm the one hurting myself here, bud, not you." His voice grew a little quieter.
"I'm sorry. I'm an idiot. I wanted you to be happy - that was it, I just wanted you to be happy, and I almost-" He swallowed, his mouth suddenly very dry. "It's my fault. She doesn't need to know. You can - you can go on your honeymoon and just --" But he couldn't get through the whole sentence.
"... I can't lose you," he whispered, pulse pounding in his throat. "I can't hurt her but I can't lose you, Bodhi."
How does he go back to simply Poe being his friend when these long buried feelings linger between them, so out in the open? The image of Josie, laughing and smiling flashes in his mind, and another one of the three of them, drinking beer and eating pizza at a bar late one night follows it.
Bodhi loves them both, and he doesn't want to hurt anyone. His new wife, or best friend.
"You're not going to lose me, yeah? No matter what, I'm still here for you."
He doesn't blame Poe for his confession coming when it did, or for his feelings to begin with. Not even slightly. Maybe if Bodhi had said something before, but... But he just wishes things could be simple, could be normal.
He'd said he wouldn't lose his friendship, but can he really promise that things would be the same? Can he really act normal or natural about this now? Bodhi swallows the lump in his throat, and looks back at the door where the rest of the party is waiting beyond it for him.
and one and a half million years later.....

"Wait, what do you-- what do you mean the same?"
